The Old Bukit Berapit Railway Station, built in 1889, was part of the early railway network in Malaya and played a significant role in the history of transportation and the country’s economic development. The station was located in the Bukit Berapit area, along the route connecting Taiping and Padang Rengas. Bukit Berapit was known for its challenging hilly terrain, and the construction of this railway line reflects the engineering prowess of British colonial infrastructure during the late 19th century.
The station was built to support the transportation of tin ore, which at the time was a key commodity in the Malayan economy. The Bukit Berapit route served as a critical link between mining areas in the north and major ports, thereby accelerating the delivery of tin ore to international markets. A large part of the route at Bukit Berapit passes through hilly terrain. One of the main landmarks in this area is the Bukit Berapit Tunnel, the earliest railway tunnel in Malaya. The tunnel was completed in the same year as the station, and it became a vital element in completing the railway network.
The historic Bukit Berapit route connected Port Weld (now known as Kuala Sepetang) to Taiping and subsequently to Kuala Kangsar, which later became part of a larger national railway system. This route helped connect remote inland areas to major towns, thereby stimulating both economic and social development.
Ensuring that the original structure and architectural elements of the Bukit Berapit Railway Station are preserved, including the historic tunnel and the surrounding environment that reflects the original 19th-century construction atmosphere.
Creating a destination that offers a learning experience for students, researchers, and both local and international tourists about the history of railway transportation in Malaysia.
Providing a space to showcase artifacts such as old locomotive models, archival photographs, tickets, maps, construction documents, and historical narratives related to the development of the national railway system.
